Planning
This project will use a series of videos and tutorials to train library volunteers. The Riverside Intermediate School Library uses both parent and student volunteers throughout the day. These videos will help the Media Specialist recruit volunteers and train them in proper procedures for the library. The videos will be created for 5th and 6th grade students as well as family volunteers of varying ages.
These videos can be used for training in a large group setting or for single viewers, they could also be made available on the school media center website and reach parents or other potential volunteers that might become interested in helping at the library. While videos are less personal than face to face training, sometimes it is difficult to properly train while classes and other school distractions are ongoing in the media center. Using videos will ensure that all proper techniques are covered and will also offer the chance for refresher courses. Some parent volunteers come from other schools in the district and need to learn the procedures used at Riverside, as the Media Specialists in the district are allowed to run certain functions in their library however they see fit.
The use of video for this project is necessary because many of the functions are better shown than explained. The library management system will be featured for check in and out procedures and other functions that volunteers may have to use on a daily basis. Audio that accompanies the video will help reinforce key concepts and help explain what is being shown. A tour of the library will also be necessary since shelving is a large part of the volunteer responsibility.
